New trends in interior design.

For those interior design junkies who are looking to update or redo their luxury apartments in Cape Town, here are the latest trends from London about to hit South African interior design:

  1. You will find that the new contemporary design that will feature in trendy Cape Town guest houses references everything that is retro or traditional.
  2. Interior design will be referencing the 1940’s and 1950’s as well as traditional English hobbies, like horse riding.
  3. Holiday villas in Cape Town that are classically proportioned, specifically the neoclassical style of architecture, like a traditional Manor house, will soon become popular again.
  4. Designers will be decorating their flats to rent in Cape Town with neoclassical design elements such as statues and busts.
  5. When visitors are searching for places to rent in Cape Town for the summer, they will find elements of lace a remaining trend.
  6.  The current design trend is about legacy, bequest and heritage and is about remembering the past.
  7. Interior designers have become more eco-conscious in recent years and will continue to recycle.
  8. Old fashioned English things, such as tea, cake stands and blackboards are still in fashion and will be found in many rental accommodation Cape Town.
  9. There has also been a trend towards connecting with the earth in the last year or two, so expect to find some vegetable patches in much Cape accomodation. In fact there is a move towards more organic food and products in general, with the philosophy being that the closer the food is to nature (the less preservatives and insecticides used) the better it is for you.
  10. There is definitely a move towards, simple, humble interiors, although with more attention to style than the country cottage looks of the past that included florals, trims and many dried flowers in milk bottles.

Kitesurfing in Cape Town

Due to the consistent south-easterly wind, in recent years Cape Town has become one of the kitesurfing hotspots of the world.  The kitesurfing season starts and ends the same time that the south-easterly begins and ceases blowing, form October to March.

The beach in Tableview is probably the best beach for kitesurfing in Cape Town and has become known as ‘Kitebeach’ and is probably the best spot for kitesurfing in Cape Town. Another great spot is the Langebaan Lagoon, which is also a great place for beginners to learn.

Other great beaches for kitesurfing are Sunset Beach, past Muizenberg, but only on light wind days.  Dolphin Beach, near Milnerton, is one of the best places to show off the moves acquired after many hours spent in the water. For those not living in Cape Town, the Strand is the best southerly hotspot to kitesurf in Cape Town. For those lucky enough to stay in Cape Town, the river mouth next to Wang Thai restaurant is the best westerly spot to kitesurf in Cape Town.

Hakgat, Platboom, Scarborough and misty cliffs are all good spots for waveriding, however Misty Cliffs requires the expertise of an experienced wave rider.

There is much accommodation Cape Town South Africa can offer in and around these spots for visitors looking to kitesurf. For those seeking luxury apartments Camps Bay has many near the beach, unfortunately Camps Bay and Clifton are usually protected from the south-easter.
For a central spot, Waterfront apartments Cape Town will not disappoint. When booking a Cape Town apartment rental, be sure to book in advance as many of these Cape Town luxury apartments are in high demand during Cape Town’s summer season.

Wherever you book your holiday apartment Cape Town, be sure to book an apartment with a view as many Cape Town apartment rentals offer views of the sea, mountain or our famous African sunsets.

luxury apartments in Cape Town | Fabric forecast

Fabric colours have changed in recent years, it just doesn’t seem like it as these changes have been so subtle, according to Jane Mervis, co-owner of Wolf Street Fabrics and long time interior decorator.
She has recently returned From Chelsea design week and the Propste Fair in Italy and has brought with her many of the predictions for fashion interior fabrics for this season.

Firstly, Jane states that clothing’s colour and fabric trends usually come into interiors a year later. So in general, you can expect whatever you were dressing in a year ago to be applied to the soft furnishings of your Cape Town accomodation. Jane uses jeans as an example, last year (continuing into this year) we were all wearing denim, now it is just starting to rear its head in fashion interiors. Jane warns that indigo, the colour used to dye denim should not be confused with navy when it comes to decorating your luxury apartments in Cape Town.

While we decorate our homes and holiday villas in Cape Town in varying shades of grey, these will begin to be infused with brighter colours, such as pinks and turquoise. The use of this colour combination is not a current trend, rather it is just the crest of the wave, but expect to see these colour appear in Cape Town guest houses in the coming months.

Jane advises that you should always introduce trends into your Cape Town acomodation as it suits you and not just blindly follow trends. She uses the anecdote of a few years ago when the trend dictated that all houses should be painted yellow with green shutters, she followed suit until a client said that she didn’t want to wake up every morning to a house that looked like scrambled eggs and pea soup.

Swimming with penguins

The four Clifton beaches are some of the best beaches in Cape Town, there are many luxury Clifton apartments for rent in the area. If you have been fortunate enough to secure one of these Clifton beach apartments it is not surprising that all that you will want to do on your visit to Cape Town is spend your days on the beach and spend your evenings in your luxurious apartment in Clifton. But, there are other beaches in Cape Town, which might add some variety to your holiday.
Such as Boulders Beach in Simonstown. While Boulders beach, like all other beaches in Cape Town, offers silky white beach sand and blue seas, Boulders also offers something unique to other beaches, penguins. Anyone who has come into contact with these flightless birds cannot deny their charm.  There is nothing as sweet as having a swim in the clear water while a penguin paddles beside you.

The growing penguin colony at Boulders is said to be around 3000, although the species as a whole is endangered.  Penguins have fallen victim to industrial progress, oil spills and declining food resources have decreased the number of penguins from millions in the 1930’s to under 180 000 today.
The Table Mountain National Park has been encouraged recently to oversee the area as part of their duties, which included establishing an information center and fencing off the area and creating a boardwalk to restrain the birds from wandering inland and into traffic. The penguins are safe at Boulders beach, their only threat is being run over by a car, which they sometimes crawl under for warmth.
A single pair of African Penguins which began mating in 1985, are solely responsible for the entire Penguin population at Boulders. African Penguins remain with the same partner, they usually breed throughout the year but the Boulders penguins breed between March and May.
